The most interesting new routes added in 2022 are those that we're most excited to fly in 2023.

What do you think about spending a long weekend in Palma de Mallorca or Tenerife in Spain?

It is now much simpler than ever before to travel from the United States to these and many other popular summer destinations thanks to United Airlines. This is because the carrier, which is based in Chicago, began new nonstop service during the pandemic, which contributed to the company being the largest U.S. airline operating in the transatlantic market.

This year, the airline began the largest transatlantic expansion it has ever undertaken, which involved the addition of five new destinations as well as the introduction of five additional routes to existing locations.

United's schedule was loaded with lots of exciting routes that complement traditional transatlantic markets like Paris and Rome, such as direct service from Amman to Amman in Jordan, Boeing 737 MAX flights to Portugal's Azores, and a new flashy route to Mallorca. All of these routes complement United's existing network of destinations.

This year's TPG Awards recognised United's transatlantic expansion in 2022 and what's likely to be a busy 2023 schedule as the best new route(s), while TPG's Editors' Choice award went to United for the best new route(s).

The new routes that United Airlines introduced in 2022 were so successful that all of them, except one, will be maintained for another year.

THE POINTS GUY
The only one that will be eliminated is Bergen, Norway since it did not achieve the performance levels that the airline required. The cities of Amman, Jordan; Palma de Mallorca, Spain; Tenerife, Spain; and the Azores, Portugal will all be making a comeback.

In addition to the service that will be resumed, United will begin flying to three new locations the following year: Malaga, Spain; Stockholm; and Dubai. Flights to Dubai will be handled by United in conjunction with their recently formed partnership with Emirates.

Additionally, the airline will introduce four new routes to established destinations, which are as follows:

  • Rome to San Francisco.
  • Ireland's Shannon to Chicago
  • Barcelona to Chicago
  • Berlin to Washington.

Last but not least, the airline will increase service to London and Paris, the two main European markets from the United States. On March 25 and June 2, respectively, the airline will introduce a second daily service between Los Angeles and London and a second daily flight between Washington and Paris.

Although the new United service is exciting news, the airline goes above and beyond to make these new flights particularly unique.

THE POINTS GUY1
United Airlines has announced its major transatlantic flight schedule into an annual tradition throughout its history. In the months leading up to the announcement, the airline teases its customers on its social media channels about the new markets that will be served by the flights. Even the airline's network planning staff is featured in a teaser video for the company's advertising.

In the time leading up to the debut of the new service, United will advertise the new markets through the use of signage in airports as well as across its onboard entertainment system.

When it's time to celebrate the airline's new route, you can be sure they'll throw a good party.

THE POINTS GUY2
Aviation fans shouldn't miss out on the opportunity to experience a United inaugural flight — they get everything from commemorative Polaris pyjamas to special amenity packs and meals. In most cases, other executives will join in on the fun, and the cabin staff will almost always be quite enthusiastic about the new service.

You might even get to attend a fun after-flight party, such as the one depicted here at the opening of the Mallorca location in June of this past year.

THE POINTS GUY3
United is fulfilling its mission of becoming "the flag carrier of the United States," a statement that was first shared during the unveiling of the Emirates partnership in September and has since been repeated by executives during recent media calls. With this massive transatlantic expansion, United is fulfilling its mission of becoming "the flag carrier of the United States."

One thing is certain, regardless of whether or not United is considered the "flag carrier" of the United States: the airline currently services a significantly greater number of transatlantic destinations than any of its domestic rivals.
