The Leatherman Signal Review

Leatherman Signal

I've spent a lot of time over the years looking for the multitool that is most suited for people that are into the outdoors. It should come as no surprise that multitools have a variety of uses. Some of them concentrate on household upkeep and problems, while others highlight equipment for the workshop or on mechanical problems (think your cycling or bike multitools). Leatherman's Signal is the best I've found for general outdoor and survival situations.

In the following, we will go over the 19 tools that are accessible on the Leatherman Signal and compare it to some of Leatherman's other multitools that are geared for outdoor use.

The Signal comes with some helpful self-defense skills.
Two of the most useful tools for emergency preparedness and survival in the great outdoors that I've ever seen on a multitool are located on the exterior of the Signal. The first item is a ferro rod, while the second is a whistle. I have to admit that the version of myself that was 23 years old would probably make fun of the version of myself that is here and now because the present version of me mentioned a whistle first in a review about a multitool that is as badass as the Signal. Nevertheless, here we are. A circumstance in which you need to be discovered or in which you are seeking to find someone else is much improved by the use of a whistle. Why? A whistle requires less effort to blow than yelling does, will stay longer (you can maintain a blow into a whistle longer than you can a scream), and can be louder than yelling in some situations.

Following that, the Ferro rod (which the 23-year-old version of myself would be happier about). Users can start fires in a pinch by striking the included Ferro rod with the reverse side of the folding saw. This is the same piece that functions as the whistle. This, however, is not the kind of thing I would recommend utilising as a standard fire starter. This is designed to be used in an emergency situation in which you have either become separated from the rest of your gear or have forgotten your fire starter at home. The Signal is my favourite stand-alone multitool because, in addition to the fuel needed to start a fire, it comes with everything else you need to light a fire, including the necessary tools. This is what makes the Signal so wonderful. The folding saw will be used to cut limbs, the knife with the straight edge will be used to generate kindling, and the ferro rod will provide the spark.

The Signal is differentiated from other popular multitools manufactured by Leatherman, such as the Surge, Wave+, and Skeletool, by its capacity to create fires.

The blades of the straight-edged and serrated knives, as well as the blunt-edged hammer, are some of our favourites.
The Signal also provides a few essential camping tools that are some of our favourites. To begin, there is the hammer, which is essentially the Signal's side that is not pointed. And despite the fact that it is not the most convenient or comfortable hammer, it is ideal for use in situations involving hiking or bikepacking. When I've gone bikepacking, I've used it on many occasions to pound tent stakes into the ground.

When camping or in any other outdoor activity, having pliers that also have wire cutters might come in very handy. When I'm fly fishing, the pliers and cutters come in very handy for situations in which I need to reshape the barbs on my hooks, make repairs to my rods or reels while I'm on the river, or cut off my line or leader. The fact that the blade can cut a variety of materials because to its combination of a straight-edge and a serrated edge is another feature that I really appreciate.

If we were able to make some modifications to the Signal, one of the first things we would do is switch out the Awl tool and the can/bottle opener with something else. There isn't much of a need for the Awl tool in a multitool, and bringing a can opener camping is very much a thing of the past. We don't plan on cracking open a can of beans when we're out in the wilderness. And even if we did, we'd probably just buy a can with a pop-top if we had the option.

For road excursions in your RV or van, it comes with a box wrench and a bit driver.
Last but not least, we have the tools that are more mechanically focused; these are great to have when RVing or living your best #vanlife. Attachment points are provided for a hex bit drive with a quarter-inch diameter, as well as two box wrenches of varying sizes. Attachments can be purchased independently from Leatherman. The bit driver, which is located next to the awl tool and the can opener, is another one of our favourites. Compared to other multitools, such as the Surge, this one is noticeably lighter on the more mechanical tools.

Regarding the things that you receive, the price is very reasonable.
In Leatherman's lineup of multitools, the pricing of the Signal falls somewhere in the centre to high middle of the spectrum. But considering what you get and the longevity of Leatherman products, we believe that this is an investment that is a no-brainer for anyone who spends time outside camping, fishing, backpacking, bikepacking, or hiking. I keep it at the door so that I can easily grab it and toss it into my daypack when I go hiking, my fly-fishing gear kit, my camping gear, or for any other kind of backpacking trip.
