This Beautiful Island Is Known as the "Emerald Isle of the Caribbean," and It Features Both Active Volcanoes and Beaches Covered with Black Sand.

On the stunning island of Montserrat in the Caribbean, these are some of the best places to dine, stay, and have fun.

black-sand beaches

Travelers who would want to mingle with nature rather than with large numbers of other tourists can consider visiting Montserrat. The tiny volcanic island in the Caribbean is home to warm, proud people with a unique cultural legacy, as well as verdant slopes teeming with flora and animals, an active volcano known as Soufriere Hills, and secluded black-sand beaches.

Because of the striking similarities between its coastline and that of Ireland's, it is also referred to as the Emerald Isle of the Caribbean. Montserrat is the only country in the world that celebrates Saint Patrick's Day as a national holiday; this is despite the fact that a significant number of its citizens can trace their roots to Ireland. As part of this festival, an uprising that was staged by Africans held in slavery against European colonists in the year 1768 will be honored.

Montserrat is still a flourishing, wildlife-rich island that has rebuilt and repaired itself based on the island's strong cultural traditions, despite the fact that it is often remembered for a horrific volcanic eruption that occurred in 1997 and buried the capital of Plymouth. Here are a few different avenues to investigate:

The Process of Getting to Montserrat

Getting to Montserrat

The island nation of Montserrat can be found in the Caribbean's Eastern region. Due to the fact that there are no direct flights from the United States, the majority of international visitors arrive on the neighboring islands of Antigua and Barbuda (V.C. Bird International Airport). Both Fly Monserrat and SVG Air provide passengers with the opportunity to go to Montserrat when departing from Antigua. The flight lasts for roughly twenty minutes.

When to Travel to Montserrat for the Best Experience

Plan your trip between the middle of December and the middle of April to take advantage of the sunny weather and near-perfect beach days. However, the weather during this time of year may be quite humid, and there is an increased chance of tropical storms. The late season, which spans the months of August through October, can typically provide cheaper airfare and lodging options.

The Top Activities and Attractions on Montserrat

Hikers

There are nine routes for hikers to explore in the northern half of the island, the majority of which are located in Centre Hills. Rewards along the way include spotting 34 species of birds that inhabit the island, including Montserrat's endemic oriole, the endangered mountain chicken (a type of frog), and the rare galliwasp, a creature that is half snake and half lizard. In addition, the mountain chicken is on the verge of extinction. Turtles typically arrive on the island's beaches with black sand between May and December in order to nest. Snorkeling trips over the island's colourful coral reefs are provided by a number of local dive operators who have received PADI training. Garibaldi Hill, Jack Boy Hill, and the Montserrat Volcano Observatory are just a few of the vantage spots on the island from where visitors are able to get a view of the island's active volcano, Soufriere Hills. And while you are on the Buried City tour, you will have the opportunity to observe structures that were buried by volcanic material as a result of the eruption in 1995.

The Cudjoe Head Fest takes place at the end of July and is a celebration of the island's African ancestry. The festival include a performance by a steel band, festivities at a carnival, local acts, and an exhibition of goods manufactured in the hamlet. The annual Alliouagana Festival of the Word is a literary event that attracts award-winning writers and readers from all over the world. This festival is a must-attend for anyone who has a passion for reading.

The Finest Accommodations Available in Montserrat

Tropical Mansion Suites

On Montserrat, you can forget about staying at a typical all-inclusive hotel. What you will discover here, on the other hand, are quaint bed-and-breakfasts, boutique hotels, and villas with breathtaking views of the ocean. The Tropical Mansion Suites are located on a hilltop that is covered in vegetation and are only a five-minute drive from the airport. Each of the 16 rooms at this property has its own own balcony with views of the ocean. Or, view the magnificent Soufriere Hills volcano from Olveston House, which was formerly owned by the late Sir George Martin, who was famous for producing music by The Beatles. In addition, guests can enjoy a glass of wine on the big porch while taking in the multicolored garden scenery that surrounds the property.

Gingerbread Hill is all about self-sufficiency and sustainability, including the use of repurposed materials, hydroponic gardens, and trees where visitors may harvest their own fruit. The property is situated on three acres on a quiet mountainside. There are four different types of self-service accommodations, each of which has hand-painted tiles and wraparound verandas. There are a variety of villas available on Montserrat for those who like their accommodations to be more private. Concierge services, daily housekeeping, and private chefs are included in many of them.

The Finest Restaurants and Watering Holes on Montserrat

Do not pass up the opportunity to sample Montserrat's traditional national cuisine, goat water, if you find yourself in a position to do so. The chunks of goat flesh in the robust stew are best enjoyed when still hot with a crusty roll of bread. In addition, the island is home to a variety of fruits that are perfect for making excellent juices. Some of these fruits include soursop, mango, blackberry, guava, tamarind, gooseberry, and West Indian cherry, which has a flavour profile that is comparable to apples.

Olveston House

Sarah Sweeney, who has won multiple awards as a chef, is responsible for the Olveston House's world-famous menu. Dishes typical of British cuisine, such as pork tenderloin, are given a Caribbean twist and are served in a setting resembling a tropical garden on a veranda that wraps around the building. The Eton Mess, which consists of meringues, whipped cream, and fresh berries, is a well-liked option for dessert on the menu. Both the bustling pub night on Friday and the BBQ feast on Wednesday are fantastic opportunities to mingle with locals and get to know the island better.

Summer Breeze is a restaurant with a view of Little Bay Beach that serves a wide selection of curries and other fusion foods in addition to rotis and paninis. These dishes go particularly well with a robust rum punch. The garlic shrimp and the king fish with curry are two of the most popular dishes on the menu.
