The top hotels in Milan

2023-02-14  Diana Solomon

Where to stay when visiting the city.

The nation's most cosmopolitan metropolis, Italy's financial center is brimming with artistic flare and cultural panache. In recent years, upscale hotels have proliferated all around. In Milanese architecture, bourgeois palazzi with green courtyards have been transformed into slick residences, some of which are part of pricey global chains like Mandarin Oriental and Four Seasons.

Given that this is Italy's fashion center, there are plenty of opulent hotels to serve as a base for some people watching (the Bulgari is a prime example). Milan isn't only about fashionistas stating their need for attention, though. There are cozy B&Bs and reasonably priced, family-run hotels tucked away here and there. Here are the top hotels in Milan where you may stay when visiting.

1. Mandarin Oriental, Milan

Best hotel in Milan for hip luxury

The Mandarin, located in the Fashion District in an early 20th-century home, features magnificent boiserie created by Italian artisans in delicate, mellow tones. Visitors and locals alike swarm to the Mandarin Bar & Bistrot to enjoy creative drinks in a striking geometric environment (in summer, the action moves outside to the leafy courtyard). Executive Chef Antonio Guida creates innovative Italian meals at the Michelin-starred Seta restaurant, drawing on his Apulian heritage. The tranquil spa, which includes a swimming pool, saunas, steam rooms, and holistic treatments that integrate the finest elements of Eastern and Western therapies, is a hotspot for wellness seekers.

2. Bulgari Milan Hotel

The best hotel in Milan is for ardent fashionistas.

There is no better location to see or be seen than in the summer when the jet-set congregates in Bulgari's exquisite gardens, which are shaded by plane and horse chestnut trees. Black Zimbabwean marble, copper, and Burmese teak wood are all present within. The elegant bathrooms include travertine stone accents, granite bathtubs, and, of course, delectable Bulgari products. Light pours in through the rooms' high windows. Head to the spa to get pampered (there's a 12-meter gold mosaic pool) before eating at the restaurant, which is run by the well-known chef Niko Romito.

3. Portrait Milano

The third painting of Leonardo Ferragamo's Portrait triptych, Portrait Milano, is intended to appeal to the fashion population that visits the city all year long. From here, it's just a short walk back to the hotel lobby with any bags you may have picked up in the famous Fashion Quadrilateral. Suites are decorated in wood and cardinal red velvet and resemble mid-century dwellings. Ornate details include antler-like leather knobs made by Florentine artisans and vanity kits hidden within suede trunks. Alberto Quadro, previously of Barcelona's Disfrutar and Copenhagen's Geranium, is in charge of selecting traditional Lombardian fare like bowls of gooey ravioli and risottos topped with veal. In spring 2023, the Longevity Suite will open, turning this city-center hideaway into a stylish all-rounder.

4. Hotel Principe di Savoia

The best hotel in Milan is classic grandeur

One of Milan's great dame hotels, one has exquisite décor fusing traditional and Art Deco elements. The lobby bar is decorated with a massive Murano glass chandelier and old master paintings by artists like Luca Giordano, while the opulent suites have murals and custom Italian furniture. Celebrities and socialites enjoy drinks at Principe Bar as the sun sets, which is distinguished by a stunning sculpted tinted crystal bar and back-lit mirrored wall, before scurrying across to Acanto for Italian cuisine accompanied by one of Milan's best wine lists. Early risers may be seen working out in the mornings at Club 10, the hotel's exclusive 10th-floor fitness center while taking in the city views from the floor-to-ceiling windows.

5. Roommate Giulia

Best hotel in Milan for antique enthusiasts

This hotel is positioned in the middle of Milan, close to the majestic Duomo, and has eccentric design elements with vibrant bursts of color. The 1960s Milanese homes of Spanish designer Patricia Urquiola served as her inspiration for creating vintage interiors with vibrant colors and personality. The color-coded rooms come in tones of green, light blue, and terracotta, with furnishings in vivid palettes contrasting with geometric patterns. Walls are enhanced with artwork by local painters, photographers, and illustrators. While there isn't a restaurant there are plenty of places to dine nearby, and breakfast is provided till noon with a colorful display of fruits in market crates. The basement houses a small gym, a steam room, a sauna, and a therapy area.

6. Senato Hotel Milan

A chic boutique hotel is the best option in Milan.

This upscale hideaway is a world away from the hectic Via Senato; cross the street and the Fashion District's cobblestone streets will engulf you. A little courtyard pool at the hotel's entryway radiates serenity, and handmade lamps with ginkgo leaf shades hang over the lobby. Black, white, and brass are prominent colors, and all-white rooms are furnished with modern Milanese pieces. The five-story Neoclassical structure that houses this chic café is owned by the Ranza family, who were determined to give it a very Milanese feel. Local artisans created the furniture, and Senato Caffè's ingredients are meticulously chosen from small and medium-sized manufacturers in Lombardy.

Address: Via Senato 22, 20121 Milan, Italy, Senato Hotel Milano

g Armani Hotel Milano

7. Armani Hotel Milan

The best hotel in Milan for fashion week

Giorgio Armani's self-styled hotel, located in the city's affluent Montenapoleone neighborhood, acts as a hideout for the worldwide catwalk scene during fashion week. With floor-to-ceiling windows, rooms drenched in natural light, and a relaxing, contemporary palette of grey, powder blue, and pearl, expect the same degree of high-end minimalism as you would from the apparel brand. Also controlled via an iPad are the curtains, lighting, and even room service. As dusk falls, patrons make their way to the Michelin-starred Armani/Ristorante for internationally-inspired Italian dishes like lasagne with langoustines, baby squid sauce, and tomato confit. There is also the nearby Armani/Bamboo Bar, which offers a custom cocktail menu with picture-perfect views of the city and the Duomo (try the herb-infused Bosco Verticale). The live jazz sessions on Sunday evenings are a great reason to reserve a table.

8. Vico Milano

Best Milan hotel for affluent city dwellers

Vico Milano, which only has seven beds and is located close to fashionable Via Tortona, makes the ideal Milanese pied-à-terre. The hotel is in a building that used to make racing bikes. It then became the fashion studio and showroom of the Baccheschi Berti family, who now run the hotel. The furniture here is made by hand by artisans from Tuscany and Sicily. A sensual mood is given off by velvets, woods, and marble, while decorative objects were collected from far and wide (think Persian rugs and Balinese wall hangings). Teak flooring, off-white walls, and potted plants in the rooms maintain the tranquil ambiance while Moroccan glazed tiles in vibrant shades of pink, green, and burgundy add zest and vigor to the bathrooms. Go downstairs to the den where bartenders mix cocktails and offer wines from the family vineyard in Tuscany by descending the glass-enclosed staircase.

Address: Vico Milano, Corso Genova 11, 20123 Milan, Italy

9. LaFavia Milano

Best hotel in Milan for elegant comforts at an affordable price

This charming B&B, located in a 19th-century private apartment building, blends vintage and Art Deco and is close to Porta Nuova's business sector. The apartment is filled with character and is furnished with items that owners Marco and Fabio have collected from their travels over the years, including furniture handed down from family members and Indian rugs from Darjeeling, a Mexican statue of La Catrina, a palm-shaped lamp, and wicker chairs from Barcelona. The bathrooms have hand-painted Sicilian tiles, and the rooms have delightful accents with whimsical motifs like ochre-colored wallpaper with floral patterns. Our favorite part of the breakfast service during the warmer months of the year is the lovely patio.

Address: LaFavia Milano, Via Carlo Farini 4, 20154 Milan, Italy

10. Ostello Bello

Best Milan hotel for budget-conscious night owls

This vibrant hostel is brimming with personality, and the trinkets and oddities that were acquired at antique markets give the interiors a cozy atmosphere. There are a few string guitars and a piano scattered about, and it's fairly relaxed back with some visitors lying about playing board games and others strumming melodies. Private double rooms and cozy dorms with private toilets are available for guests to stay in. The kitchen is equipped with complimentary items like fruits, vegetables, and pasta so guests may conjure up a meal when hunger strikes. The pub is extremely well-liked and hosts many regular events, including quiz nights, poetry readings, and live music performances that draw a local and international population.

Address: Via Medici 4, 20123 Milan, Italy, Ostello Bello

11. Locanda Pandanus

Best hotel in Milan for inexpensive stylish

You'd be excused if you didn't see the entrance to this little hideaway located above a busy bistro/café. To the sound of coffee makers buzzing and churning, squeeze past the crowded bar and ascend to this hidden retreat with just four rooms. You'll find thick velvets in bright colors like terracotta and turquoise, retro geometric patterns, and smart fabric wall coverings. The elegant bathrooms with monsoon showers are made of white and black marble to give them a timeless look. Although the activity is downstairs at the cafe, head there for a snack or an aperitivo as the sun sets. There is a tiny lounge where you may relax.

Address: Locanda Pandenus, Via Mercato 24, 20121 Milan, Italy

l Four Seasons Milano

12. Four Seasons Milan

Best hotel in Milan for elegant refinement

The Four Seasons Milano, which is housed in a monastery from the fifteenth century, radiates tranquility thanks to its enclosed courtyard filled with laurels and box trees. You are right in the middle of Milan's Fashion District on Via Gesù as you go outside. The original elements, such as the frescoes, plaster ceilings, and stone sculptures, have been exquisitely conserved. Rich Fortuny textiles, burl and pearwood cabinets, and baths with Carrara marble contribute to the décor's traditional elegance. In the convent's former cellar, there is a lovely spa with a swimming pool where you may swim a few laps beneath tasteful arched ceilings. Best practice: The hotel offers a well-liked breakfast on Sundays with sweets spread out in the Chocolate Room, a space covered with 300 kilograms of chocolate.

Address: Via Gesù 6-8, 20121 Milan, Italy, Four Seasons Milano
