The 10 Best Small Towns in Arizona

Visitors are drawn to destinations like Phoenix, Tucson, Sedona, and Flagstaff by their renowned museums, impeccable golf courses, and spectacular resorts and spas. But some of the state's best-kept secrets may be found in Arizona's tiniest communities, which have fewer than 5,000 inhabitants. These little communities in Arizona will astound you with everything they have to offer, from wineries and historic sites to art galleries.

Jerome

The 10 Best Small Towns in Arizona

From its vantage point on Cleopatra Hill, "America's Most Vertical City" stares out over Verde Valley, but it's not the view that makes it one of the most well-liked vacation spots in the state. People travel to Jerome to visit its art galleries, one-of-a-kind stores like Nellie Bly Kaleidoscopes, and tasting rooms where they may taste regional wines. More interested in history? Jerome State Historic Park is a must-see if you want to learn about the area's mining history. You can spend a weekend in Jerome because it has many bed and breakfasts, privately run hotels, and top-notch dining options.

Tombstone

The renowned hamlet where Wyatt Earp, his brothers, and Doc Holliday fought the notorious cowboy gang at the O.K. Corral draws tourists from all over the world. It appears that not much has changed since then in many aspects. The historic district's dirt lanes are lined with wooden sidewalks, and you can visit the Bird Cage Theater, which is now a museum. You may travel in a stagecoach, watch a reenactment of the fabled gunfight, and enjoy live music while eating a hamburger at Big Nose Kate's Saloon. After that, proceed to Boot Hill to pay your respects to the deceased.

Bisbee

This mining hamlet, which is only 25 miles south of Tombstone, used to be the biggest metropolis between St. Louis and San Francisco. It is well known for its excellent bars and restaurants, vintage boutiques, and art galleries. The Smithsonian-affiliated Bisbee Mining and Historical Museum is one of many museums that examine Bisbee's mining heritage. After that, take one of Old Bisbee Ghost Tours' excursions or a tour of the Queen Mine. A few miles south of Bisbee, take a drive to the Lavender Pit Mining Overlook for a more up-to-date view of mining.

You may easily visit both small villages for a weekend break because Bisbee and Tombstone are so close together.

Seligman

Seligman, the final Route 66 town to be cut off by I-40, served as the model for Radiator Springs in the animated film "Cars." Visit the Route 66 Gift Shop & Visitor Center for mementos, or stop by Delgadillo's Snow Cap Drive-In to see cars in the parking lot decorated as movie characters. If you're lucky, Angel Delgadillo, who was in charge of getting Route 66 designated as a historic roadway, will be in the gift shop.

Continue travelling west on Route 66 towards Kingman to relive the heyday of the Mother Road, passing the occasional gift shop, tourist destinations like the Keepers of the Wild animal sanctuary, and deserted gas stations en route.

Oatman

You may travel another 100 miles west on Route 66 from Seligman to Oatman. The town's main street, like Seligman's, is lined with eateries and gift shops. Wild burros, the offspring of packing animals released when the mines closed during World War II, are Oatman's claim to fame. Numerous stores offer treats you may give them, and the spirited animals put on a show, occasionally braying, fighting, or getting into mischief.

Williams

This small community off I-40 honours Route 66 with themed restaurants and gift shops, but the Grand Canyon Railway pulls just as many tourists as the Mother Road, if not more. Visitors can spend the night at rim lodging at the Grand Canyon or return a few hours later after boarding the antique railway at the Williams station. Williams also has two zoo-like attractions, the Grand Canyon Deer Farm and Bearizona, where visitors may see bears, bison, and other creatures native to the Southwest, in addition to the train.

Strawberry

This village, hidden among the pine trees close to the Mogollon Rim, offers a surprisingly wide range of activities. To get to a picturesque swimming hole and waterfall, you can hike in the neighbouring Tonto Natural Bridge State Park or take the Waterfall Trail on Fossil Creek. A historic one-room schoolhouse, a number of fine eateries and pubs, and a boutique hotel called The Strawberry Inn are also located in the community. If that weren't enough, you can travel a few kilometres to the south to visit Pine's stores and activities.

Cornville

This small rural town near Sedona is worth keeping an eye on, especially if you enjoy wine. Javelina Leap Vineyard & Winery, Oak Creek Vineyards & Winery, and Page Springs Cellars are three prominent wineries in Cornville that all provide tastings. The on-site Page Springs Cellars cafe and outdoor seats are excellent for enjoying a drink while listening to the creek gurgle by. Go to G's Burgers, which has a 50s vibe, for a more relaxed meal. Tubac

The Tumacookery, which sells gourmet foods, is one of the specialised stores in this artistic neighbourhood along I-10 south of Tucson. Although you may browse both for an entire day, make sure to stop by the Tubac Presidio State Historic Park, which is home to the first European settlement in Arizona. The park offers live history performances in addition to exhibits on the early town and fort from October through March. Make it a weekend trip by reserving a stay at the Tubac Golf Resort, a nearby boutique hotel, or a bed and breakfast. "Tin Cup," a 1996 Kevin Costner film, showcased its golf course.

Willcox

Located in the southeast of the state, Willcox is home to seven vineyards as well as the u-pick Apple Annie's Orchard, which is open from July to October. But you should visit in the winter to view the over 20,000 sandhill cranes that gather at Willcox Playa, or anytime to check out the Rex Allen Museum, which is devoted to the local Western movie hero. There are numerous paths close by, but those in the surrounding Chiricahua National Monument offer access to the harsh terrain where Apache chief Geronimo and his people hid from American troops.
