The best hotels in Lisbon at the lowest prices

2022-12-29  Diana Solomon

Our selection of low-cost accommodations in the Portuguese capital for limited funds

The hotel scene in Lisbon is expanding and getting better every month as the city's recognition grows. There is a neighboring boutique hotel or an extension of a worldwide brand for every pastel de nata shop. Lisbon undoubtedly has some beautiful spots to lay your head on, but not all of them are inexpensive. Thus, we enter the picture. We searched the entire city for the most affordable hotels, all of which provide rooms for less than £150 a night.

One of Europe's most interesting cities to visit right now has a lot to offer, whether you're seeking a central hotel in Avenida Liberdade or Bairro Alto or want to explore hip neighborhoods like Principe Real and Rato. These are our favorite inexpensive Lisbon hotels, listed in no particular order, and range from a fun and frivolous stay in one of the city's hippest neighborhoods to a tranquil respite from the hustle and bustle.

1. Hotel 1908

The seafood paradise Cervejaria Ramiro, probably one of Lisbon's top restaurants, is direct across the street from Hotel 1908. This hidden gem is located in a beautifully majestic 20th-century building in a part of Lisbon that is popular with locals and tourists. When you first lay eyes on the hotel, one of the city's most recognizable structures, you'll be struck by its opulence. Opened in 2019 after years of neglect, the property now pays respect to Portuguese artists with artworks woven into the original design. Warm green and purple color schemes, black face towels designed expressly for removing makeup, and attentive care from staff members who remember your name and greet you cordially are just a few of the minor elements that make this hotel special.

The hotel's accommodations are as distinctive; for example, the "Square Rooms" provide a view of the bustling Largo do Intendente, while the "Attic Rooms" are a group of three rooms with a private lobby that may be reserved individually or collectively. The main suite with a ton of room and access to the hotel's iconic dome is "The King of Dome," the crown treasure if you're ready to spend extra. It makes for a truly memorable visit.

Where? Address for Intendente: 1100-285 Lisboa, Largo do Intendente Pina Manique No 6,

2. Hotel

You may get a great deal at this new hotel, which debuts in July 2022, by booking off-peak or during the week. Thanks to its distinctive architecture and restaurant, Animal, which provides the city with some much-needed Asian-inspired flavors, it has become a city landmark in and of itself. Visitors may opt to relax inside or outside the courtyard, which also contains a beautiful black-tiled pool and a living wall made of plants from the adjacent Botanical Garden of Principe Real. The hotel's main selling feature is its distinctive design elements, which catch guests' attention right away due to its outside green tiles that are laid out in a scale-like 3D pattern. Local artisans designed both the interior and outside of this building, and the outcome is very appealing. On each floor, there will be a small collection of art, and a snake-print carpet will lead you up the stairs.

The hotel's 36 rooms have their distinctive styles while being fairly subdued compared to the public spaces. Sizes range from tiny to a junior suite, and most have Lisbon's iconic wrought iron balconies. The rooms are decorated in mellow shades of ochre, dusty pink, and sage and each has custom furnishings. It seems like a particularly exceptional stay at this hotel because of the abundance of diversity and thoughtful nuances.

Where? Address for the Avenida da Liberdade is Tv. Glória 22, 1250-118 Lisbon.

Cost: Doubles start at £143.

3. Lumen Hotel

Budget hotels often lack personality, but Lumen's distinctive design breaks from the mold. The hotel's 160 rooms are cleverly lit to let visitors enjoy Lisbon's renowned sunlight in their rooms and the public spaces. The rooftop carries on the outdoor motif and provides one of the greatest views of the city as well as an orange-tiled pool, which is unusual for a city center location. Additionally, there is an interior courtyard and a fantastic restaurant featuring creative Portuguese cuisines, such as tuna pica-pau and shredded duck (where the majority of tables face towards the garden, so guests can soak up more vitamin D). The nightly video mapping performance in the courtyard, where visitors can view pictures of the city projected onto the walls in a magnificent 15-minute presentation, is the hotel's connection with the sky's dazzling jewel.

Every room has a floor-to-ceiling window overlooking the street or the inner courtyard (so you can see the nightly show from your room) and is adorned in yellow, orange, or grey to mirror the changing sky. Staff is available around the clock in case you need any help, and the beds are big and comfy.

Where? R. Sousa Martins 20, 1050-217 Lisboa is the address for Picoas.

Cost: Doubles starting at £113 per night.

4. Mama Shelter

It's usually a smart idea to get Mama Shelter if you want a brand you can trust. With locations in 16 cities, the company is adept at catering to a wide audience, and their blend of lighthearted irreverence and simple, enjoyable living may be a welcome change from stuffy, formal city center hotels.

In 2021, when the city was beginning to see its post-Covid boom, the brand's Lisbon location opened. The brand delivers a lively attitude to compete with some of the more conventional local hotels and is conveniently located next to Principe Real, one of Lisbon's trendiest neighborhoods. Small rooms are typical for an inexpensive hotel, but the company makes the most of the space by adding big windows, wacky artwork, and even X-rated programming to the big-screen TVs (guests are encouraged to have fun during their stay). The hotel's restaurant, which serves food including black Angus carpaccio and salmon tartare as well as pizza by the slice to eat in or take to your room, is billed as "a Portuguese recreation of a French bistro." The rooftop bar is the gem in the crown, with views of the entire city and an outstanding cocktail menu (a personal favorite is the Amália Rodrigues, a take on the Negroni).

Where? Address for Rato: 19 R. do Vale de Pereiro, 1250-270 Lisboa

Cost: Doubles starting at £69 per night

1 Wine & Books

5. Wine & Books

Yes, the name may appear gimmicky at first, but the Wine & Books chain is growing in popularity in Portugal thanks to its nods to the country's history and culture and its high-rate customer care. The company is now opening additional hotels in Porto and Sintra, with the Lisbon hotel being the first to do so in 2021. The interiors were designed to provide authentically Portuguese experiences, and they emphasize a fusion of old and contemporary. With tributes to the past in the shape of antique furnishings and the restaurant Tasca de Memória, whose cuisine was designed by chef Hugo Cortez Teixeira and honors historic recipes and culinary experiences, guests can expect modern comforts like the cloud-like mattresses and on-site spa.

This hotel is a great starting point for those who wish to discover a different side of the city because it is situated in Belém, about 10 kilometers from the city center of Lisbon. Belém is rich in ancient landmarks, from the tower overlooking the Tagus to the Jerónimos Monastery or the Memória church across the street, and makes for an interesting visit to the Portuguese capital.

Where? The address for Belém is Tv. da Memória 62, 1300-403 Lisbon.

Cost: Doubles start at £122.

1 Palacio das Especiarias

6. Palacio das Especiarias

Palacio das Especiarias, which translates to "spice palace" in English, is a 16th-century structure that honors a period when spices in Portugal were only used by the affluent. Although the structure and its components are now much more easily accessible, classical elements are still very much present. Here, lofty ceilings, grand staircases, and a stunning outdoor courtyard are to be expected. All of these features seem truly Portuguese without being over the top.

Each room is distinctive, so you'll be thrilled whichever you select - an economical room with palatial décor and river views or the deluxe suite with its terrace and outdoor bath (plus arguably the best bathtub view you could ask for). Visit the spa while you're there for a candlelit subterranean massage in the most tranquil setting.

Where? The address for Chiado is R. Horta Seca 11, 1200-221 Lisbon.

Cost: Doubles start at £112

7. Browns Boutique

Browns Boutique, a favorite of individuals who wish to be as central as possible, is a fantastic, economical choice for those traveling to Lisbon for the first time. The boutique hotel offers just 32 rooms, making it appear cozy and pleasant even amid one of Lisbon's busiest neighborhoods, and is just five minutes from the neighborhood's abundance of restaurants, Bairro Alto.

There is a little bit more space available than in most low-cost hotels, and the rooms are straightforward yet clean and pleasant. There are different types of rooms, including a suite, and a bar and restaurant if you want to stay at the hotel instead of going out to see the area.

Where? Address for Baixa: R. da Vitória 88, 1100-619 Lisbon

Price: Doubles starting at £62
