How Seven Different Locations Across the United States Will Be Celebrating Black History Month This Year

2023-02-02  Maliyah Mah

The entire country is getting into the celebratory spirit, from Philadelphia to Santa Monica and everything in between.

Black History Month,

Since 1976, the month of February has been set aside as a time for Americans to reflect on the essential part that African Americans have played in the development of the United States. The month of February, which has been formally designated as Black History Month, is a time to honor, recognize, and celebrate Black history. This is a history that has been foundational to the expansion of the United States economy and infrastructure and has played an important role in the development of American culture.

To this end, it is essential to honour the contributions of the individuals who have made the United States of America what it is today. Even though the accomplishments of African-Americans in terms of both their work and their culture are worthy of recognition on a daily basis, the month of February is when the recognition of black achievements reaches new heights in the United States. This is when a number of cities across the country go all out to honor and celebrate Black History Month.

We hope that these activities, which take place in locations ranging from tiny villages to major cities, will encourage you to celebrate Black History Month either at home or in a new location.

San Antonio, Texas

San Antonio, Texas

The University of Texas at San Antonio goes all out for Black History Month, beginning on February 1 with a month of activities, events, and celebrations to honor the historical achievements of African Americans. The events are still going on from that vantage point. There will be a discussion led by Dr. Gregory Hudspeth, the president of the local branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). In addition, there will be activities like as a reduced Spurs game and an Afrobeat's barre workout session.

On February 11, there will be a Black History Bus Tour held outside campus that will travel around the East Side area in San Antonio. The bus tour visits a number of San Antonio's most historically significant African American landmarks and locations, such as Ellis Alley, which was the first African American settlement in San Antonio after the emancipation, and the Ella Austin Orphanage, which grew out of the home of Ella and Edward Austin and had a significant impact on the San Antonio community.

The San Antonio African American Community Archive and Museum (SAAACAM) will begin presenting their Black History Film Series at the conclusion of the month of February. The monthly series will begin in March and continue through November 2023, with each event taking place on the third Thursday of each month.

Location in Ohio: Wilberforce

The larger Ohio towns of Cincinnati and Columbus both had a lot going on, but the things that were available in the charming and historic community of Wilberforce, which is located twenty minutes east of Dayton, drew our attention. One of the highlights is an exhibit that is on display everyday at the National Afro-American Museum and Cultural Center. It examines how Black history has been depicted in comic books. The exhibition, titled "Behind the Mask: Black Power in Comics," sheds light on the historical portrayal of black people in comics as well as the rise of black artists of comics.

The "Black Love" themed juried art show will be on display at the cultural centre for the entirety of the month, and you will have the opportunity to view it. The presentation of awards for the art show will take place on February 25.

Another important permanent exhibit at the cultural centre is titled "Queens of the Heartland," and it details the lives and accomplishments of thirty African-American women who have been active in the movement for social reform since the 1800s. Nichole Washington, an artist from New York, contributed some of her portrait illustrations to the show as well.

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

For those who are particularly interested in the arts, Philadelphia is the place to be during Black History Month. This season, the Kimmel Cultural Campus and the Philadelphia Orchestra are presenting a lineup of events with the intention of paying tribute to the significant achievements made by Black artists in the fields of opera, theatre, jazz, and dance. The Philadelphia Orchestra will perform William Dawson's "Negro Folk Symphony" again on February 2 and 3, and on February 3 and 4, live filming will take place for Wanda Sykes' upcoming comedy special on Netflix. These two events are among the highlights.

This year marks the return of Drumline Live, a competition that highlights the high-stepping style of marching bands from historically Black colleges and universities. The competition had a stellar showing in 2022. A portion of the proceeds from this event at Kimmel Cultural Campus will be donated to the United Negro College Fund in the state of Pennsylvania.

Off the Kimmel Cultural Campus, the excitement continues with Grace Dance Theater's 11th Annual Black History Celebration, where the region's most talented dance companies and ensembles showcase their routines, and the moving "Forgotten Histories: The Original Brown and Copper-Colored People of the United States" presentation at the Parkway Central Library. Both of these events can be found at the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts.

Santa Monica, California

The Santa Monica Black History Month Committee started planning events in January 2023, with the topic of Black Resistance serving as the unifying theme for all of the activities. On February 1, a party will be held to mark the beginning of Black History Month. There will be food trucks there, and attendees will dance to the rhythms pumped by DJ Ron.

On February 2, there will be an a cappella performance by members of the Calvary Baptist Church of Santa Monica, followed by a free violin concert and a screening of a documentary film. You can catch special Black History Month exhibits at the Santa Monica City Hall and city libraries throughout the month. In the latter half of the month, there will be not one but two book talks, one of which will include author Catherine Adel West.

Denver, Colorado

Denver, Colorado

In Denver, celebrating Black History Month does not take place over the course of a single month. The activities begin in January and will continue every month until the Colorado Black Arts Festival in July. The month of February's celebrations feature two performances on Grant Street (on February 3) and Alameda that highlight the music of Black, Indigenous, and People of Color from throughout the world (Feb. 4).

At the Museum of Contemporary Art, the exhibition "The Dirty South: Contemporary Art, Material Culture, and the Sonic Impulse" will be closed for the final time the day after it officially opens. This show examines the history and legacy of Black culture in the South, as well as the ways in which it has influenced artistic and musical expression over the past one hundred years and is therefore an absolute must-see.

On February 25, the musical group Same Cloth, which is based in Denver, will be performing on stage for two separate shows in quick succession. The band, which is fronted by the vocalist Joke and keyboardist Solomon J. Chapman Sr., will take you on a musical journey that will include both original songs and cover versions of popular songs.

The ever-famous city of New York

Black History Month is celebrated in New York City in a manner that is befitting of its status as the most populous city in the United States. One of the highlights of the offers in this city is an art display called "Kindred," which was created by the multimedia artist Demarcus McCaughey. The show, which will be inaugurated on February 4 with a celebration, will pay tribute to Black American ancestry and the role it played after the abolition of slavery.

On February 19, the city will hold the African Popup Festival at Hudson Station, which will showcase food, culture, and community; on February 22, the Harlem Chamber Players will offer their 14th Annual Black History Month Celebration. Both events will take place during Black History Month.

Programming at the New York Public Library (including some events co-hosted with the co-founder of Black Lives Matter) and special exhibitions and collections at the Museum of the City of New York are examples of ongoing activities that take place at these institutions.

Delray Beach, in the state of Florida

Delray Beach, Florida

Although there is a lot going on around the state of Florida in celebration of Black History Month, the relatively small city of Delray Beach has some of the most exciting events and activities scheduled. At the heart of everything going on is the Spady Cultural Heritage Museum, which was established with the intention of highlighting the achievements made by African and Caribbean Americans.

The museum provides tours of Delray Beach, including a walking tour that takes tourists to the first Black school, church, and hotel in the neighborhood, as well as relates the tales of the early Black pioneers who settled there. In addition, on February 17, the Spady Cultural Heritage Museum will play host to the annual Black History Youth Awareness Art Festival, which is currently in its second year. It is the goal of the festival to engage the kids of Palm Beach County via the mediums of art, music, and the study of Black history. Submissions of artwork and performances are encouraged.
