The top Manchester museums

2023-03-01  Diana Solomon

These are the city's top locations for some cultural exploration.

1 Joel Chester Fildes

Although having a prominent place in the UK's music and fashion sectors, Manchester hasn't always been regarded as one of the country's cultural epicenters; it's known more for its vibrant nightlife than its museums. But just as the city is establishing itself as a truly global destination and one of the most exciting and electric places in the country, thanks to its growing restaurant and hotel scene, so is its cultural scene. In the city that gave birth to LS Lowry and Stanley Chow, innovative theater, film, and art institutions coexist with old institutions rich in internationally acclaimed works of art.

You may learn about anything from ethnic representation to the effects of war through Manchester's broad selection of galleries and museums, while also taking in some beautiful landscapes. We list Manchester's top museums.

The Whitworth.

A short stroll south of the city center, amid densely populated university land, is The Whitworth, one of the most opulent art galleries in the North. Although the multi-story structure emits a certain degree of majesty, the collections within focus more on the excitingly innovative and ground-breaking, with former featured artists including activist Ai Wei Wei and Cornelia Parker, a darling of the avant-garde. Also, there is a propensity to embrace contentious, timely, or socially conscious issues, such as "Queer terminology" and the place of Muslim women in the arts. It's one of the biggest art hangouts in the city, spanning many levels and featuring a sizable, elegant café and restaurant (which is typically packed to the gills on weekends). So, it is important to provide enough time for a stroll. During the warm summer months, every visit should include a picnic on the gallery's lawn or, at the least, some downtime on a garden deckchair, if you are fortunate enough to score one.

North IWM

War may not always be the most interesting or upbeat topic, but since IWM North's inception in the early 2000s, it has grown to be one of the most important cultural attractions in Manchester and the surrounding North of England. The Salford Quays skyline, created by "starchitect" Daniel Libeskind, is readily recognizable thanks to its enormous metal shards slicing into the sky. Another museum built on a Manchester Blitz bombing site is worthwhile only for the structure. It would be a shame to miss the carefully curated exhibitions, and in addition to the permanent installations, IWM North frequently hosts temporary exhibitions. Recent highlights include a moving retrospective of artist Wyndham Lewis and a newly commissioned photographic series of Holocaust survivors. It's a fantastic reason to explore the area, which is only a 15-minute tram ride from the city center and where The Lowry theater and Coronation Street's drama-filled cobblestones are located.

The Manchester Art Gallery

The most prestigious standing collection in the city is still housed at Manchester Art Gallery, despite some younger arrivals may be nipping at its heels in terms of creativity and originality. On its nearly two-century-old walls, paintings by high art masters beside towering columns, in crimson painted, ornately corniced salons, including Renoir, Constable, and Turner. It is classic shoe-stomping-on-parquet exhibition material, and just seeing the grouping of three old buildings is worthwhile. The impressive triple-height entrance hall has a charming nearby café and gift shop, which is perhaps everyone's favorite feature after all. Upper levels also showcase visiting modern collections, artisan exhibits, and a recently built Fashion Gallery that features items from the clothing collection, one of the largest in the UK, in addition to the classic works of fine art.

Manchester Jewish Museum

While being established in the middle of the 1980s, Manchester Jewish Museum gained fresh notoriety when it reopened in 2021 after a stylish makeover and eye-catching addition. The museum and gallery, which was originally constructed as a Spanish and Portuguese synagogue in the 1800s, tells an enthralling story of Manchester's Jewish past via oral history, photography, and artifact collections. Yet, it does more than offer a captivating view of the past; in addition to being one of Manchester's greatest museums for holding community activities, it is also a fabulously vibrant destination for tourists and residents who are well-versed in the arts. While the regularly scheduled Jewish Culture Club invites guests, Jewish or otherwise, to reflect on everything from the future of Yiddish to Netflix's My Unorthodox Life, the seasonally held Synagogue Nights series features jazz sessions, immersive theatre performances, and poetry readings in the beautifully restored sanctuary.

HOME

HOME is the city's most diverse center for modern culture, including two theaters, five cinemas, an art gallery, a bookshop, as well as several pubs and restaurants. Here, you can grab some pizza, watch the newest independent film, or have a glass of wine and a monologue. A respectable schedule of events is available at any given time, but it's worthwhile to look over the full calendar because HOME hosts several recurring events all year long, such as Viva!, an annual celebration of Spanish and Latin American culture, as well as an urban folk festival with live music and movie screenings. Also, it's one of the few locations in the city that routinely screens arthouse and independent classics, whether it's a 1950s classic in black and white or an Oscar candidate in a foreign language that you missed the first time around.

Factory International

The greatest cultural undertaking to open in the UK since London's Tate Modern, Factory International rises from the banks of the River Irwell in the center of Manchester. Its large warehouse space is slated to contain ambitious and monumental works that have never been displayed in the area. It is envisioned as a significant worldwide arts center. The launch program is packed with both local and international creative giants to arrive with a bang. While a Yayoi Kusama exhibition will honor three decades of her dot-festooned inflatable sculptures, some reaching heights of over 10 meters and soon to be shown together for the first time, filmmaker and Bury-boy Danny Boyle has been tapped to direct an immersive performance piece featuring a live cast of dancers.

The Esea Contemporary

The gallery, which was formerly known as the Centre for Chinese Contemporary Art, reopened in 2023 under the name esea contemporary, expanding its scope to include works by artists of East or South East Asian heritage. It had previously been shuttered for a few years and undergone a minor refurbishment. One of Manchester's less well-known, or at least less publicized, cultural features, esea is located in the Northern Quarter, a hip area of the city noted for its independent shops, rowdy bar scene, and creative vibe. It's one of Manchester's more intimate galleries, but it's also one of its most innovative and thought-provoking. It's housed inside a Grade II-listed old fish market.
