Earthquake in Turkey and Syria: how to assist right once

2023-02-09  Diana Solomon

Here is what we can do in response to the 7.8-magnitude earthquake that devastated southeast Turkey.

Two massive earthquakes in southeast Turkey and northern Syria killed hundreds. Millions of Syrian refugees live here. As rescuers scour thousands of fallen buildings for survivors, many hospitals must evacuate to protect patients and employees. Closed bridges and failing roads hinder and threaten life-saving relief delivery.

The best approach to help the afflicted areas right now is to donate to international relief organizations that are giving food, water, sanitation, and medical care in the wake of two earthquakes that registered 7.8 and 7.7 on the Richter scale and crossed the Turkish-Syrian border.

We anticipate a significant demand for rehabilitation, says Humanity & Inclusion, an NGO that works hard to ensure that persons with disabilities and recent injuries receive the exact care they require. There are thousands of wounded people, and if they do not obtain the proper rehabilitation treatments, many of these injuries might deteriorate or result in lifelong disability. Additionally, many affected have experienced trauma and will require psychosocial help.

Four million Syrians rely on humanitarian aid in the region where UNICEF is active, and they are assisting unaccompanied minors in the largest nation hosting refugees in finding their families. "The fact that the first earthquake struck so early in the day when many kids were deep sleeping, made it considerably riskier, and the aftershocks continue to pose concerns. Our thoughts and prayers are with the impacted children and families, particularly those who have lost loved ones or suffered injuries. Our first concern right now is making sure affected families and children get the help they so urgently need.

When a crisis strikes an area that is already undergoing a crisis, Save the Children is one of the worldwide charities that mobilize support in needy areas and help children and families in such places. While the area is suffering frigid temperatures and snowstorms, this earthquake was one of the strongest to impact the area in the past 100 years and left many homeless. The impacted communities' schools are currently shuttered for a week. Sasha Ekanayake, Save the Children Türkiye, said, "Our teams are working rapidly to make sure that every one of our personnel is safe and to deal with the disaster, but the international community must react immediately to offer help to the thousands of people in need.
